Darren England is to take charge of the championship clash at Home Park on Saturday.
Darren England, a Premier League referee, will officiate Plymouth Argyle’s Championship game against Middlesbrough on Saturday at Home Park.
When England officiated Liverpool’s match against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield and failed to reverse an inaccurate judgment made on the field to deny a goal for offside against Luis Diaz, the home team lost 2-1. This incident put England at the center of a major controversy.
As a result, England was substituted as the fourth official for the following day’s Premier League match between Brentford and Nottingham Forest.
England returned to refereeing duties for Cardiff City’s 2-0 home championship win against Bristol City last Saturday, and now he will officiate at Home Park this weekend.
He has been a Premier League referee since 2020 after starting out in the EFL in 2015. He took charge of the FA Trophy final at Wembley in May, when FC Halifax Town beat Gateshead 1-0.
England has been the referee for six games this season and has shown 34 yellow cards but has not sent anyone off. Two of those matches were in the Premier League, most recently the Aston Villa 3-1 home victory over Crystal Palace on September 16.
He has also taken charge of two European ties, including the 3-2 away win for Turkish side Besiktas against Ukraine’s Dynamo Kiev in a Europa League play-off that was played in the Romanian capital city of Bucharest.
The last time England officiated an Argyle game was in November 2018, when they lost 5-1 at Kenilworth Road to Luton Town in a League One match. The previous month, he had led his team to a 3-1 victory at Home Park over Gillingham.
James Bell will serve as the fourth official for Argyle’s match versus Middlesbrough. He is one of the Select Group 2 referees that officiates championship games on a regular basis.
