‘Oh my god’: Gary Neville stunned by what he’s seen from 24-year-old Newcastle Star player tonight
Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff earned praise from Gary Neville for his second-half effort in the Carabao Cup last-16 win at Manchester United.
In the 76th minute of the game, with the Magpies already 3-0 up at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old let rip with an audacious effort from range which nearly found the net.
Longstaff tried his luck from outside the box, and it ended up being just inches wide. Neville loved what he saw from the Newcastle ace.
He said, as per the Sky Sports website|: “Oh my god! I’m thinking that’s in! What a strike from Longstaff.”
It would’ve been the cherry on top for Newcastle, but in the end, it didn’t matter, as the Magpies ran riot against Man United.
The Magpies took the lead in the 28th minute through Miguel Almiron, who netted with a fine finish after amazing work from Tino Livramento.
The 20-year-old won the ball back in his own half and easily got past Mason Mount before playing a great ball to the back post for the substitute.
Then, in the 36th minute, Lewis Hall hit a clearance from Harry Maguire first-time from the edge of the box straight into the bottom corner of the net.
And on the hour mark, Newcastle went out of sight as Sofyan Amrabat was dispossessed in midfield and Joe Willock made the most of it with a powerful, side-footed effort.
Newcastle make amends against woeful Man United – TBR View
The Magpies have now beaten both Manchester teams en route to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
But while beating City was a big feat, the win over United seemed almost routine. While the Magpies were great, the hosts were poor.
Onto the next round, and Newcastle will definitely fancy their chances of going one better than they did last year in the Carabao Cup.
They’ve already beaten last season’s winners, getting a small measure of revenge, plus last term’s treble winners in this competition.
