The Dutch defender spent last season on loan to the Pilgrims from Premier League club Wolves and made a total of 41 appearances.
Former loan signees for the Plymouth Argyle Grasshoppers of the Swiss Super League have finally welcomed Nigel Lonwijk into the team after he was absent for the first three months of the season.
The Dutch defender was on a season-long loan from Premier League team Wolves to the Zurich-based team in July, but he sustained an injury shortly after and hasn’t trained with his teammates since two weeks ago.
Two days after turning twenty-one, Lonwijk made his debut for the Grasshoppers in a 3-1 loss to St. Gallen on the road on Sunday.
Lonwijk was brought on as a halftime substitution, along with Theo Corbeanu, who is also on loan from Wolves to Grasshoppers, with the team down 3-0 at the half.
Lonwijk will aim to start the following game, which is on the road against Lucerne on Sunday, after assisting his team in maintaining a clean sheet in the second half.
Grasshoppers, who have won the Swiss championship 27 times, are presently in 10th place in the Super League with 11 points from 12 games out of 12 clubs. Englishman Matt Jackson, a former defender for Everton, Norwich City, and Wigan Athletic, is the club’s president. He is located in Zurich.
After leaving Dutch team PSV Eindhoven to join Wolves in January 2020, Lonwijk is currently in his third season-long loan stay. He was in his own country in 2021–2022, with Argyle during the previous term, and currently with Grasshoppers.
The adaptable defender enjoyed a great tenure with the Pilgrims, starting 32 games and making nine replacement appearances while they were the League One champions and the Papa Johns Trophy finalists at Wembley.
Lonwijk is back in shape and will try to help Grasshoppers advance in the Swiss Super League. They now sit six points clear of bottom club Basel and one point ahead of Lausanne in eleventh position.
