Pardew had a great impact in Berkshire before – but he shouldn’t be looking to make a return to the Select Car Leasing Stadium right now.
Dai Yongge’s six-year tenure at the club has been marked by disaster, with only one season considered successful. After their relegation last season, which would have been avoided if not for a points deduction due to EFL business plan violations, they currently find themselves at the bottom of League One following a loss to Portsmouth. Their on-field performance is in dire straits, and the appointment of Ruben Selles has proven to be a poor choice.
A change in ownership could potentially address the club’s financial challenges, including difficulties in bill payments. Reports suggest that Mike Ashley has shown interest in the third-tier side, and there is evidence that their fanbase would be open to him as a potential owner. Despite facing criticism during his ownership of Newcastle United, Ashley did ensure financial stability by promptly settling bills and maintaining the club’s financial health.
If Mike Ashley were to become Reading’s owner, it’s speculated that he might consider appointing Alan Pardew as the manager. Ashley and Pardew have a close working relationship from their time at Newcastle, and Pardew previously managed Reading, contributing significantly to the club’s success.
However, there are reasons why Pardew’s return might not be ideal. Selles could be replaced if Ashley takes control due to poor results this season. Nevertheless, Pardew’s return could be challenging in terms of winning over supporters who still remember his controversial departure from the club to join West Ham in 2003, with some labeling him ‘Pardjudas.’ Additionally, with Reading’s current position at the bottom of the league table, the managerial role presents a daunting challenge.
