Sunderland’s top player outlines his weekend goals that he intends to accomplish.

Patrick Roberts wants to score first goal of the season for Sunderland.

It is quite shocking to see that Patrick Roberts is not one of SUNDERLAND’s nine different scorers in the Championship following the team’s first 13 games of the season.

The 26-year-old contributed five Championship goals to the previous campaign, and even if he hasn’t always been a consistent scorer, he should have opened his account by now.

It’s not like he has been having trouble entering the opposition’s 18-yard box; in fact, the most recent game, Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Leicester City, was not the first in which he found himself in a number of good positions, only to have his shots saved or fail to reach the target.

In his quest to score his first goal of the season, a chance that he hopes to seize during today’s home game against his former club, Norwich City, the player acknowledges that it’s high time he followed his teammates’ example and found the back of the net.

“We’ve seen goals from various players this season, but I’m still waiting for my first,” Roberts admits. “I’m hoping it’ll happen this weekend. We’ve all been contributing, which is what makes this team special. We have some young and fearless players. Our team keeps growing, but ultimately, we need to achieve results.”

Sunderland’s recent string of defeats, including a Wear-Tees derby loss to Middlesbrough and a loss to Leicester City, marks the first time they’ve suffered three consecutive defeats since Tony Mowbray’s appointment as head coach last season. Despite this, Roberts remains optimistic and undeterred by the losing streak.

The loss to Middlesbrough was, in part, due to a controversial red card given to Dan Neil just before halftime, while Tuesday’s defeat came at the hands of a strong Leicester City side, who have won 12 out of their 13 matches this season.

Roberts comments on the challenges of competing in a competitive league and acknowledges the importance of results while emphasizing the team’s hard work, especially with such a young squad.

Although Roberts won’t turn 27 until next February, he is one of the senior members of Sunderland’s squad, with over 200 senior appearances in England, Scotland, Spain, and France.

Roberts had a loan spell at Carrow Road during the first half of the 2019-20 season, but it wasn’t a successful one, with limited playing time. He fared better during his time at Middlesbrough in the second half of that season. His journey as a Manchester City player, with frequent loan moves, made it challenging for him to settle and establish himself at any one club.

Despite his varied experiences, Roberts has found a home at Sunderland and hopes to extend his stay beyond the end of the current season when his contract is set to expire. He is determined to win the upcoming match against Norwich, a club he played for in the past, and aims to give the fans something to be proud of.
