Following Gary Rowett’s departure earlier this month, Millwall is still without a manager.
Since then, Millwall has played two games under interim manager Adam Barrett: a home loss to Blackburn Rovers and a draw with Preston.
The Lions are currently four points outside of the top six in the Championship table, but even though they are in 16th position, it doesn’t appear likely that Millwall will finish in the play-off spots this year.
Their manager search doesn’t seem to be progressing very quickly, and they aren’t performing well.
Anticipate the club’s diligent efforts to find a suitable replacement for Rowett behind the scenes. It’s a challenging task, as the majority of the current team was assembled during Rowett’s four-year tenure, so any incoming manager will essentially inherit a Rowett-built squad.
Whether Millwall is exploring options domestically or internationally remains uncertain. However, someone with experience in the championship is usually a reliable choice, and one potential candidate who might become available soon is Paul Heckingbottom.
Heckingbottom’s situation at Sheffield United is becoming precarious. The team has now lost its last five league matches and sits firmly at the bottom of the championship table with just one point from the first nine games of the season. According to reports from talkSPORT, Heckingbottom could be on the verge of losing his job, especially if Sheffield United fails to win against Arsenal on Saturday.
Heckingbottom has a track record of securing promotions in League One with Barnsley and in the Championship with Sheffield United, often against the odds. Last season, his team at Sheffield United exceeded expectations by finishing second behind Burnley and playing an exciting and attacking style of football, which aligns with what the Millwall board is likely seeking in their search for a Rowett replacement.
Heckingbottom is a seasoned manager in the Football League who appears to be in a precarious position, and the chances of a win against Arsenal this weekend seem slim. Therefore, Millwall should definitely monitor this situation closely.
