Ryan Lowe Unhappy As PNE Miss Out On Penalty v Southampton As He Send Keys Words To Him
Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe has admitted his disappointment at missing out on a penalty against Southampton.
North End hosted the Saints at Deepdale in something of a topsy-turvy clash.
Southampton took the lead through Kyle Walker-Peters, but PNE came out firing after the break and turned the game on its head with goals from Milutin Osmajic and Brad Potts finding the net.
There was late heartbreak though as Southampton grabbed a leveller after bringing goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu up for a last-gasp corner.
The goal has gone down as a Ched Evans own goal with PNE players looking crestfallen after missing out on three points in dramatic fashion.
Ryan Lowe rues missed PNE penalty
The game could have been very different through as North End had a huge shout for a penalty before half-time.
Southampton couldn’t clear a corner and Will Keane thought he had found the net from close range.
Bazunu made an initial save but the ball was still going in the net before striking the hand of Southampton man Shea Charles on the line.
The ball went out for a corner but PNE players appealed for a penalty, only to be snubbed.
This is especially annoying for North End as we had a similar situation just a few days ago with Millwall defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy handling a ball inside the box.
That went unnoticed too and Lowe has now told iFollow that he believes this was a stonewall penalty.
Lowe noted that he could understand not giving a penalty if the ball had ricocheted onto Charles elsewhere in the penalty area.
Yet with the ball heading towards goal, Lowe thinks this should have been a penalty – and we would agree.
Lowe added that he is now sick of refereeing apologies having received one for the Norton-Cuffy moment on Saturday and with another one probably coming after the Southampton clash.
“The lads are a little bit disappointed in the dressing room, I’ve had to pick them up and tell them how good they were,” said Lowe. “It’s gut-wrenching when you come from a goal behind to get in a winning position at 2-1 but, again, we should have had a penalty beforehand.”
“When you look at it back, people will say it’s the defender’s leg and it’s hit his arm, it’s hit the keeper’s leg, the keeper has saved it with his feet, and then it’s hit the defender’s arm, it’s going in the goal. If it’s either side of the goal and it’s not going to go in the goal, or it’s just outside or in the six-yard box or penalty area, I get it – but not if it’s going in the back of the net.”
“I’m just a little bit sick of getting an apology last week for a penalty that should have been and then I’m probably going to get another one, but it means nothing,” he added.
