Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher is acutely aware of the threat Sheffield Wednesday will pose at Home Park tonight.
Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s winless start to the season, Steven Schumacher, the manager of Plymouth Argyle, is cautious about the threat the Owls will present tonight.
The Hillsborough club’s season has started horribly; after 12 games, they have only managed three points, leaving them nine points out of safety.
At the beginning of the month, the Wednesday leadership fired Spanish assistant Xisco Munoz and replaced him with Danny Röhl, a former RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and Germany employee.
The 34-year-old was in the dugout for the first time at the weekend. Despite a much-improved and more resilient showing on the road at Watford, the Owls still fell to their ninth defeat of the season courtesy of Yaser Asprilla’s late winner.
But ahead of welcoming the South Yorkshire outfit to Home Park, Argyle boss Schumacher has warned his players they are in for a far tougher fixture than the form guide might suggest.
“They’ve just changed their manager, so they’re going to be highly motivated,” said Schumacher. “They’ve struggled for results this season, with a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday, a bit of disruption.
“It seems now that the new manager is going to come in with new ideas. I’m sure the players will buy into it and take it on board. They were a lot better on Saturday in their performance against Watford than they were previously.”
Disruption and outside noise will be something Röhl will be keen to shut out from the first team squad as they look to turn around their disastrous start to life back in the Championship.
After playing their part in a scintillating promotion battle last campaign, Schumacher believes Wednesday still have the ability to pose Argyle problems on their trip to the south coast.
He said: “There’s a few new players, but they’ve still got the nucleus of their squad. We’re still speaking about the same players for Sheffield Wednesday, the ones who we need to be aware of, the ones who we know have got so much quality.
The hosts currently sit in 21st, four points above the relegation zone. The Greens’ defence impressed in a goalless away at West Brom last time out and the side will be keen to recapture that clinical home form that saw them dismantle Norwich 6-2 in September.
For Röhl’s travelling Wednesday side, three points is a must ahead of Sunday’s South Yorkshire derby with rivals Rotherham United.
Currently, four points above the relegation zone in 21st place, are the hosts. The Greens will be eager to reclaim the clinical home form that saw them destroy Norwich 6-2 in September after their defense shone in their most recent goalless away loss to West Brom.
Before facing rivals Rotherham United on Sunday in the South Yorkshire derby, three points is a requirement for Röhl’s Wednesday team on the road.
