The Championship club announced on Wednesday night they had mutually agreed to part company with Gary Rowett.
After Millwall confirmed on Wednesday night that Gary Rowett and the Championship club had mutually agreed to split ways, Adam Barrett has started a second stint as caretaker manager.
On Saturday, the Lions’ away encounter against Ryan Lowe’s Preston North End will be under the direction of the former Plymouth Argyle defender, with first team coach Paul Robinson assisting. Barrett also served as Millwall’s interim manager for three games in October 2019 following Neil Harris’ departure and before to Rowett’s appointment.
The 43-year-old initially joined the south-east London club as first team development coach in 2017 and most recently has been assistant boss to Rowett. Barrett made his league debut as a player for Argyle in March 1999 and went on to make 64 appearances for the club before leaving for Mansfield Town in December 2000.
He was back at Home Park earlier this month for Millwall’s away Championship match against the Pilgrims, which they won 2-0. That turned out to be Rowett’s penultimate match as their manager, with the final one being a 2-2 draw at home to Hull City on October 7, a result which left them 15th in the table.
Millwall chairman James Berylson said: “We greatly appreciate Gary’s efforts throughout his time in charge and he departs with the best wishes of everybody connected with the club.
“While my time working directly with Gary has been short, I have thoroughly enjoyed all our interactions and feel that he leaves us having enhanced the club’s on-pitch status during four successful years in charge.”
Rowett added: “Firstly, I would like to thank the fans for all their support during my time at the club. The atmosphere they create is truly unique. “I have thoroughly enjoyed being manager of Millwall and depart with a feeling that the club has progressed during my tenure. As is sometimes the case in football, the time just feels right to part ways.
“I would like to thank John Berylson, James, Steve Kavanagh, Alex Aldridge, my backroom staff, and everyone behind-the-scenes for their hard work and support. Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude to the players, who I thank for the blood, sweat, and tears they have put into their efforts. It has been a successful and enjoyable four years.”
Millwall said in a club statement that a comprehensive recruitment process was already underway as the club looked to build upon the success Rowett had overseen.
“We have two excellent coaches in Adam and Paul who I know the fans will really support during their time as caretaker managers,” Berylson continued. As we take the necessary time to get the appointment that is in the best interests of the football club, they have my complete support.
Steven Schumacher of Argyle is now tied for 23rd longest-serving manager among the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs following Rowett’s resignation from Millwall.
