JUST IN: Former Mag Takes Gateshead job after Mike Williamson leaves for new role

After Mike Williamson departs for a new position, an ex-mag takes a job in Gateshead.

Former Newcastle defender Rob Elliot has taken over as temporary manager following the departure of ex-Toon defender Mike Williamson from Gateshead and his appointment as manager of League Two team MK Dons.

Since taking over as manager of the Heed in 2019, Williamson has done miracles, guiding them to a promotion back to the National League and keeping them there the next season.

Gateshead is currently soaring high in the National League, sitting sixth in a playoff place after 15 games. They also enjoyed a trip to Wembley back in May where they competed against Halifax Town in the FA Trophy final.

The North East squad has been dealt a devastating blow and must now start looking for a replacement for the 39-year-old. While Louis Storey and Carl Magnay continue to lead the team, Rob Elliot will assume leadership. The former Newcastle goalkeeper will leave his position as technical director to manage the team.

Williamson, however, is looking forward to taking on a position in the football league for the first team with recently relegated MK Dons who are trying to get back on track and push for promotion back to League One. For Williamson, it is an exciting step in his management career.
