JUST IN: Official announcement of the departure of a major star to Charlton Athletic was made days before the Addicks match.
Charlton Athletic signs a former Reading FC goalkeeper.
Just days before the Royals play the Addicks, former Reading goalkeeper Sam Walker has signed a contract to play for Charlton Athletic through January.
The Royals haven’t won away from home since December 2022, while Michael Appleton’s team has gone six games without a loss.
Walker, 32, signed with Reading in 2018 and appeared in 14 games before leaving in 2021.
He played nine times in his rookie season and seven more times the season after, with the exception of his final season, which he spent entirely on loan.
He had previously gained notoriety in the Chelsea Academy, but in five years with Colchester United, he played more than 160 times.
He has played for Blackpool, AFC Wimbledon, and Kilmarnock since leaving Berkshire.
Walker stated in his address to the group, “I’m thrilled. It feels wonderful to know that I’ve been keeping myself honed and prepared for the proper opportunity. After speaking with Stephen Henderson, I learned that Harry [Isted] will be out for a while, necessitating the need for some fill-in players.
“I feel prepared to help the team, which is obviously doing well right now. Since I already know a few of the guys, I’ve blended right in. Looking forward to helping the team out.
