In response to charges of rejection, the Wrexham manager explains his decision not to travel to Las Vegas.
Phil Parkinson was absent from the Wrexham team’ celebratory vacation to Las Vegas when they won the National League title earlier this year.
Phil Parkinson, the manager of Wrexham, has disclosed that he opted not to go to Las Vegas during the summer so that his team could enjoy their promotion to the Football League.
The journey to the US was funded by the Welsh Club’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as a reward for their National League victory. But Parkinson acknowledged on talkSPORT that he missed the trip to Vegas. It was a decision. Only by decision was it done. I figured the staff should just enjoy it and let the players go.
“The owners very kindly paid for the staff to go to Portugal, so we left the players to it.” Parkinson replied, “Exactly,” when asked whether he didn’t want to “cramp the players’ style. Exactly. I would’ve acted.
Wrexham has had a successful start to their League Two season. They are currently in fifth place, three points behind league leaders Stockport. Wrexham’s latest game saw them defeat Salford City after falling behind by two goals due to goals from Elliot Lee, Steven Fletcher, and Jordan Davies.
With the score 2-1 at halftime, Parkinson continued, “Every winter is vital, and I believed that in the second half, if we could get a little momentum going, get one back, we’d go and win it. Obviously, the second goal came very quickly after. We had the better chances on the whole, I think. We had a mediocre first half performance. However, the second half was much better.
