Sandro Tonali responds to betting probe as new report reveals confession to agents and family
On Thursday evening, the Italian Federation confirmed that Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo were being investigated after allegations of illegal betting.
The pair have left the national team’s training camp and will play no part in their EURO qualifier with England next week, but an update has arrived from Italian outlet La Repubblica.
They report that the pair met with family and agents before questioning by police and confessed that they’d they did play poker and blackjack – but have distanced themselves from any sports betting.
e piece adds that the police are yet to have any concrete evidence that shows they have taken part in sports betting, but any accounts, payment methods and VPNs will be investigated in due course.
Providing these confessions are accurate and Tonali has only played poker and blackjack, this could be a positive update. A lengthy ban has been suggested if the pair are found guilty of sports betting, but it’s likely to be a fine and slap on the wrist if not.
