After Birmingham City Appointment Wayne Rooney Makes ‘Exciting’ Manager Reveals
Rival manager makes ‘exciting’ Wayne Rooney comment after Birmingham City appointment
The latest Birmingham City news as the Ipswich Town and former Manchester United coach has had his say on Rooney’s appointment at St Andrew’s
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has said that it will be “exciting” to come up against Wayne Rooney in the dugout, following his appointment as Birmingham City manager.
The former England captain was confirmed as the new boss at St Andrew’s on Wednesday morning. His arrival comes after the departure of John Eustace earlier in the week.
Rooney has managerial experience with Derby County and with MLS side DC United. He has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Blues.

Like Rooney, McKenna spent a lot of time at Manchester United. The now Ipswich boss first joined the club as a scout and U18 manager in 2016, before becoming assistant manager two years later.
He left to join Ipswich in December 2021. He has since led the Tractor Boys to promotion from League One, with the team currently sitting in second place in the Championship table as they eye back-to-back promotions.
“First of all, I think everyone realises that John Eustace did a very good job there, I don’t know him personally but quite a few of the staff do, and speak about him as a top person, and he’s done terrific there,” McKenna told Sky Sports when asked about Rooney’s appointment. “But the club have decided to make a change.
“Wayne’s a legend of English football and did a very good job in difficult circumstances at Derby and has picked up a good amount of experience now as a manager and I’m sure he can’t wait to get back.
“Of course he’s a United legend, an English football legend. It will be exciting to come up against one of his teams in a few weeks’ time, and we wish him all the best, apart from of course in those fixtures.”
Blues host Ipswich at St Andrew’s on Saturday, 4 November. The reverse fixture will take place at Portman Road on Saturday, 24 February 2024.
