Eddie Howe will be forced into at least one change to his Newcastle United starting XI v West Ham.
Anthony Gordon, who has been in excellent form for Newcastle United, will be out from Sunday’s match against West Ham United as he serves a one-match suspension.
The 22-year-old was shown his fifth caution of the year during the first half of last weekend’s 2-0 victory against Burnley. A player must serve a one-match suspension if they receive five cautions before matchday 20 of the Premier League season.
With just seven league games played so far, Gordon was within the threshold after bookings against Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion and the Clarets.
Asked about Gordon’s disciplinary record, Howe said: “He’ll be disappointed because he doesn’t want to miss any games. Knowing Anthony, he’s very, very passionate and very keen to play and show his worth. I think he’s been outstanding at the start of this year and I thought he was outstanding again on Wednesday.
“I think the booking side of things has changed this year with the rules. There’s very little leeway on anything and there’s a yellow card out.
“Whether that’s a little pause in attack or whatever it is with the new regulations that have come in so I think suspension will then come to the fore more not just for Anthony and us but for other clubs as well.
“It’s something that we will have to deal with but if we can, we’re going to try and minimise those as much as possible.”
With Harvey Barnes out until 2023 and Joelinton unlikely to feature, either Jacob Murphy or Elliot Anderson will come into the starting XI.
West Ham sit one position and one point above Newcastle in the Premier League table. Howe’s side head into the fixture full of confidence having beaten Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The win extended United’s unbeaten run to six matches.
