Sheeran displayed his delight on Instagram by posting a photo of himself wearing an Ipswich shirt while holding the badge and looking down.

The caption said: ‘E I E I O, up the Football League we go! @ipswichtown’.

The four-time Grammy winner still lives in Suffolk despite his global success and is a regular at the club’s stadium for home matches.

Sheeran has also sponsored Ipswich since the 2021-22 season, with logos of his past albums appearing on the players’ shirts.

‘I am delighted to be sponsoring Ipswich Town for another season,’ said the musician after extending the sponsorship deal in June 2022.

‘The Club and the local community mean a lot to me, and I always try to get back to Portman Road whenever I’m back in Suffolk. See you next season.’

Heading into the penultimate weekend of the season, Ipswich knew a win would see them promoted ahead of third-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

And they got off to the perfect start, scoring five goals in the opening 32 mins before adding a sixth two minutes after the half-time break.

Manager Kieran McKenna was delighted, saying:’It was amazing. I have to say it was way, way beyond what we expected.

‘I’ve seen a few of those sort of things at big Premier League grounds and for big European games, but I’ve not seen many like that.

‘Seeing people’s’ faces, the passion, the enjoyment, the excitement, the passion… it was wonderful scenes. Not many players will have experienced anything like that before in their careers. It was a really special moment.’

Ipswich sit a point behind Plymouth and still stand a chance of clinching the title if the League One leaders slip up.
