Newcastle United ace fires James Maddison ‘wind up’ promise and transfer claim
Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has claimed he’ll follow in the footsteps of Arsenal star Bukayo Saka and copy James Maddison’s celebration if he scores against Tottenham at any point this season.
The star’s comments come after Saka run up to a camera and did Maddison’s trademark ‘darts’ celebration after Christian Romero deflected his shot into his own net in the North London Derby. Despite the setback, Ange Postecoglou’s men fought back from behind twice thanks to Maddison and Heung-Min Son combining for both goals.
The first came just before halftime with the 26-year-old out-muscling Saka on the touchline before breaking into a darting run down the byline and cutting it back for Son, who placed it into the far corner to level the scores. Saka then retook the lead from the penalty spot following VAR’s intervention on Christian Romero’s handball early in the second half.
However, a crucial mistake from Jorginho on the restart meant Maddison could slot in Son to make it 2-2 after just 22 seconds. The involvements marked Maddison’s fifth and sixth of the season, with his tally now up to two goals and four assists from his first six starts.
While the spoils were shared in the derby, Ange Postecoglou has still been delighted with how his marquee summer signing has played so far. He said: “If you’ve got good players out there, they will find an understanding for sure and Sonny and Madders are on the same wavelength at times in terms of the way they see the game, which helps.
“The pleasing thing for me is we’ve scored a lot of goals this year and they’ve been fairly spread out. There are a couple of games now where Sonny has got multiple goals but even today we were a goal threat from different areas as well.”
Tottenham handed huge James Maddison injury update ahead of Liverpool
One side that’ll be ruing their failure to snatch up the former Leicester City star is Newcastle after their lengthy, multi-window saga ended in the 26-year-old choosing to move to North London instead. It was reported in January last year that the Magpies were eyeing up a move for Maddison and reportedly had multiple bids over the previous summer rejected.
In the end, he moved to Spurs for around £40 million where he’s flourished in the early stages of the season. But now Toon frontman Wilson suggests he should’ve moved up north to Tyneside instead.
“For banter I might actually do his celebration as I know him and I might make it a running thing that if you score against Tottenham you have to do Madders’ celebration,” Wilson explained on The Footballers Football Podcast. “It’ll wind him up for sure, especially as he had Newcastle and Tottenham [interest] and he chose them.
“Those assists he could have been doing up here! It might not have been me as I’ve been on the bench for a while but for Alex! I might do his darts celebration but we will have to keep it on the low!”
