After spending a brief time with Birmingham City in the summer, a former Aston Villa defender has joined Stockport County on trial

The 34-year-old only made the switch to Villa Park from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £15m last September. However, after just 21 appearances since, the Belgian looked to be moving on again, especially after the signing of fellow Belgian Youri Tielemans.

Former Aston Villa defender Matt Lowton spent time training with Birmingham City in the summer

Unai Emery now possesses a well-stocked and quality midfield weaponry with Tielemans, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, and Boubacar Kamara all capable of fulfilling Dendoncker’s defensive midfield role which certainly damages his chances of starting games for Aston Villa this season.

Lowton started Stockport’s 2-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers in the Cheshire Senior Cup last night. He recently joined the League Two side – whose squad includes Villa loanee Louie Barry and ex-Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell – on trial.

The right-back is still searching for a contract after being released by Burnley in the summer following eight years of service at Turf Moor.

Lowton spent the second half of last season on loan at Championship club Huddersfield Town, where he made nine appearances.

Blues invited Lowton in to train with John Eustace’s squad during the summer as they searched for a competitor for Ethan Laird. Lowton is well known to Blues players Kevin Long and Gary Gardner, whom he played alongside at Burnley and Villa respectively.
