Charlton Athletic man edging closer to full fitness ahead of Shrewsbury Town trip
On the final day of the transfer window, Charlton Athletic swooped to sign the defender for nothing. After MK Dons were demoted to League Two at the end of the previous campaign, the right-back severed connections with them.
The 26-year-old Watson spent the summer deciding how to proceed. He ultimately signed a two-year contract with The Valley.
According to London News Online, Appleton issued the following fitness update for the new hire: “I think he is (almost ready to start games) and that’s what sometimes gets lost in all of it. Since Tennai isn’t ready to start, or at least wasn’t until today, we didn’t really have many options in those areas. Instead, we have James (Abankwah), a center-back who plays right-back.
The return of Watson to full fitness will benefit Charlton. As the fixtures start to come thick and fast, he will provide them another option to choose from in defense.
The full-back progressed through Reading’s academy systems, playing regularly for the Royals at several youth levels before making nine appearances for their senior team. In order to gain experience, he also spent time on loan from the Berkshire team at Coventry City and AFC Wimbledon.
Charlton fitness update
In 2021, MK Dons signed Watson on a permanent basis, and he went on to play a significant role for them while he was in Buckinghamshire. Before departing from all competitions, he played 70 games.
Charlton have acquired a player who is experienced in the Football League and who will be eager to return to the Championship one day following his brief taste of football at that level with Reading as a youngster. The Addicks are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Shrewsbury.
Since taking over for Dean Holden, Appleton has earned four points in his first two games. His team is 16th in the standings.
