Cardiff City host Swansea City at Cardiff City Stadium in the latest instalment of the south Wales derby rivalry

Wales’ two Championship clubs return from the international break with a bang as Cardiff City host Swansea this weekend.

The Swans have been dominant in this fixture the last two seasons, winning all four encounters between the two rivals, recording a historic ‘double double’ over the Bluebirds.

The last time this fixture was hosted at Cardiff City Stadium, the Swans sealed a dramatic late winner in a 3-2 classic thanks to Ben Cabango’s 99th minute strike back in March. But what will this Saturday’s clash have in stall for us?

This is how our writers think the match will play out…

Glen Williams – Cardiff City correspondent
Looking back through my predictions for this fixture in recent years, I’ve predicted tightly-fought games and have backed Swansea more than I have Cardiff – and have been proven largely right.

This time, though, there is a sense that the Bluebirds go into this one as favourites. And it’s not because they’ve enjoyed a barnstorming start to the season – they have won only one of their opening five games and have relinquished points in the dying minutes of most matches – but there does just seem to be a more positive air about the place in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff have been blighted by a number of issues in recent seasons, including a managerial revolving door, a defunded squad and, most recently, a transfer embargo, but they seem a settled group this time around.

And, importantly, they are scoring goals, something they have struggled to do in recent years. The top end of the pitch looks far more threatening for the Bluebirds this time around and that is a major positive for them going into the game.

Ike Ugbo is scoring goals, so, too, is Aaron Ramsey, fresh off the back of netting his 100th senior goal with a penalty for Wales against Latvia, and he is also pulling the strings nicely. If Karlan Grant and Yakou Meite kick into gear – not to mention the bright start to the campaign Ollie Tanner has had, too – then there is real firepower for Cardiff to use.

In the defence, well, they haven’t quite got it nailed down yet. Sloppy goals and lapses of concentration have resulted in them losing a number of points and seeing them sit 19th in the table. So if there is a weakness, it’s that.

As for Swansea, life under Michael Duff just doesn’t seem to have kicked off yet. Don’t get me wrong, there seems to be no fixture like the South Wales derby to get them going, though, so it is a risk to rule them out completely.

But, for Cardiff, if ever they felt it was a good time to play their arch rivals it is probably now. I can see the Bluebirds scoring goals, but I don’t think they’ll keep Swansea out, either.

Score prediction: 2-1
