Charlton Athletic denied permission to speak with overseas manager, says reporter

Journalist Dan Marsh says that Charlton Athletic have been denied permission to talk with Mumbai City boss Des Buckingham.

Charlton Athletic are on the look out for a new boss after parting ways with Dean Holden last month.

Several names have so far been linked with The Valley vacancy but few appear to be very far down the line. Though there could be a new contender in Buckingham.

 

The 38-year-old was a youth player for the likes of Reading and Oxford United but has made his name in coaching. He headed to New Zealand in 2015 where he had spells as Wellington Phoenix’s assistant manager and manager.

He then held roles with the national side and managed the nations’ U20 and U23 sides. Buckingham then worked as assistant at Melbourne City before taking charge of Indian Super League side Mumbai City in 2021; he’s won two domestic titles with Mumbai and boasts a win record of 57.14% (36 wins from 63 games).

 

And it appears that Charlton are keen. But despite the Addicks agreeing to pay out his compensation, Mumbai have denied the Addicks permission to talk to Buckingham.

Charlton Athletic have given themselves a huge task now following the sacking of Holden.

Whether it was the right decision to do so remains to be seen. But it seems like the Addicks are pushing on with their next appointment and Buckingham is clearly someone they like.

 

Though Mumbai seem determined to keep hold of him despite the apparent compensation claim from Marsh, so Charlton may move on swiftly given that Mumbai don’t seem keen on losing their boss.

Charlton have this international break to find a new boss, with the Addicks back in action against Stevenage later this month.
