Hot prospect 18 years old brilliant star officialy signs new long-term Middlesbrough contract after previous Carrick praise

Sonny Finch has impressed Michael Carrick since the head coach’s arrival

Sonny Finch has signed a new long-term Middlesbrough contract having impressed Michael Carrick since the head coach’s arrival. The 18-year-old forward had just 12 months left on his previous deal at the Riverside but has put pen to paper on a new contract that runs to June 2026. There is also an option for a further year as Finch continues to impress at Boro.

Finch first came into the first-team picture last summer when impressing Chris Wilder in pre-season. That earned the young forward – who can play as both a striker and a wide man – a first-team debut in the Carabao Cup first-round defeat to Barnsley. He had to wait a little longer for his first appearance under Carrick after his arrival last October, but the academy prospect eventually caught the eye.

After impressing Carrick in training, Finch was handed his league debut by Carrick in March during the victory over Swansea City. The head coach said after that one: “Finchy has been excellent in training and I thought he deserved his chance. I’m delighted for Sonny. He’s one we’ve been looking at for some time now, as we do any of the younger players.

“Obviously it’s up to them to take their chances and he’s definitely done that over the last few weeks. He’s made a real impact in training and he has great character and personality.

“When they do well, that’s exactly the kind of player that we want with us. I’m delighted that I was able to get him on. I know it was only a short time but it was a big moment for him, and the boys were all delighted for him as well. Hopefully there is more to come.”
