Dean Holden, the manager of Charlton, reveals why he preferred teenage defenders 19 years old and Ness than experienced defenders at Oxford.

Former Wanderers defender Dean Holden has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Oxford.

The U’s are searching for a new boss after sacking Karl Robinson following a run of poor results in League One. Robinson spent five years in the hot seat and was one of the EFL’s longest-serving managers.

Holden took charge at Charlton back in December on a short-term deal and has helped the Addicks pull away from the relegation zone over the past few months.

The 43-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Valley after talks over a long-term contract reportedly stalled while owner Thomas Sandgaard tries to sell the club.

Sandgaard was close to selling to a consortium led by former Sunderland director Charlie Methven before the deal fell through last month.

Oxford are said to be planning a move for Holden, while QPR and Huddersfield were also previously credited with an interest.

However, South London Press claim that Charlton have not received an approach for the former Stoke assistant manager.

Holden began his playing career at Wanderers, making his professional debut under Sam Allardyce.

He went on to have spells with Oldham, Peterborough and Shrewsbury among others before hanging up his boots.

Oxford currently find themselves 17th in the table following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Lincoln at Sincil Bank. The U’s are four points ahead of the drop zone heading into the business stage of the campaign.

Former Blackpool boss Michael Appleton has also been linked with the vacant position at the Kassam Stadium.

Grant McCann, Liam Manning and former Bolton boss Neil Lennon also rank highly in the bookies’ odds at the time of writing.

Oxford will be hoping to return to winning ways on Saturday afternoon when they host fifth-place Derby (3pm).
