Bradford City manager Mark Hughes has stressed that his confidence in his squad remains intact, despite a difficult start to their League Two campaign, in quotes provided to Telegraph & Argus.

The Bantams have had a difficult start to their League Two campaign after being tipped by many to be within the promotion mix after last season’s play-off campaign. Last weekend saw the West Yorkshire club defeated 3-0 away at Morecambe by the hands of their former boss, Derek Adams.

City now find themselves on four points from their opening four fixtures, with last year’s top scorer Andy Cook yet to find the net. With everything still to play for, Mark Hughes remains confident in his side, anticipating a reaction from his players at the weekend as they welcome Crewe Alexandra to Valley Parade.

Currently 18th, Bradford will be very disappointed with the way they have started the season; however, the league is still so open in the early stages two wins could quite simply change the entire mood around Valley Parade.

Their opponents this weekend are undefeated, having come back from behind on three different occasions this season. Crewe will travel to West Yorkshire with confidence of keeping their unbeaten record intact this weekend. Bradford will need to be alert if they are to get their season back on track against The Railwaymen.

In an interview with Telegraph & Argus, Mark Hughes said: “I see the players day in and day out transferring what we talk about and what we want to do on the training pitch and for the most part, I see that in games as well.

“I didn’t see it to any great extent last week, albeit we had a little bit of foothold in the second half. But I see them on a daily basis, and I know what their ability allows them to do.

“I’m not going to think they can’t do the job just because of one game. That’s crazy stuff. They’ve got my trust. I trust them to do what they need to – and for the most part, since I’ve been here, that’s what they’ve done.”

Reflecting on the game last week, Hughes remained pragmatic about the upcoming fixture against Crewe.

“Last week was a good lesson. We’ve just got to do the things we’re capable of. Don’t try to force it just because you think you have to show what you can do by doing things in poor areas or over-elaborating.

“Just make good decisions, better than the opposition, and more often than not, you’re in the ascendancy and take the game away from them. We won’t underestimate them, but the onus is on us.”

Finding themselves in a particularly strong division this season, Bantams fans will fear that last season was their best opportunity to return to League One.

Despite this, Mark Hughes is a very experienced manager who has experienced club atmospheres like this before. His comments reflect that, a calmness that comes from understanding a bad start doesn’t mean a bad season.

If Bradford can get Andy Cook back on form and win a few games, there is no reason that the entire feeling around the club cannot change. A victory over Crewe this weekend could go a long way for City.
