Brentford offered £36.75 million for 2020 target, ending Leeds hopes of completing an £8.5 million transfer – Opinion

Brentford are reportedly looking to sign Fiorentina attacker Nico Gonzalez and have tabled a huge, club-record bid that could reach £36.75m – and a move hampers Leeds’ chances of signing Joseph Paintsil.

Gonzalez, 25, has starred over the last two years at Fiorentina. Joining the club from Stuttgart in 2021, the Argentina star has had a hand in 37 goals in 82 games. He has already scored this term for La Viola.

Back in 2020, Leeds were actually looking at a move for the Argentina star. The Guardian said Leeds wanted to sign him for £15m and talks were held in 2020, during Marcelo Bielsa’s reign as Leeds gaffer.

But he moved to Fiorentina a year later and has since impressed in Italy. Now, a move to the Premier League is on the horizon. Fabrizio Romano reports Brentford’s bid could reach a club-record £36.75m.

Meanwhile, Leeds are in the market themselves. Paintsil, 25, had a hand in 32 goals last season for Genk but he is now available. Sky Sports say Leeds are keen on signing the Ghana star, for a bargain £8.5m.

Leeds do need wingers. Jack Harrison has gone, Luis Sinisterra’s future remains in doubt and Helder Costa is expected to go. Willy Gnonto and Cree Summerville will continue to attract interest in them.

So, Leeds need a winger. Paintsil is the latest to be linked. According to Sports World Ghana, Leeds are not alone in their pursuit. Fiorentina are keen. Probably looking at him as a replacement for Gonzalez.

Fiorentina are unlikely to be keen if Gonzalez remains. They do not then need a winger. But Brentford moving for Paintsil is likely to have seen La Viola target the Leeds man. Brentford can end our chances.
