Tom Davies may be the most experienced player in the team when it comes to Premier League appearances right now, but manager Paul Heckingbottom believes there is plenty more for the midfielder to offer. He has provided his new signing with a challenge, which has been accepted by the 24-year-old.

The transfer drive so far in terms of recruitment has been to focus on young players with potential. While having one eye on the future is good for the health of the club long-term, Heckingbottom is short of top-flight know-how in his Sheffield United squad.

Davies’ 155 games at this level are an attraction but so too are his attributes. Heckingbottom wants to tap into his ability to break up play in the middle of the park, but also wants more from him as he settles into his new surroundings.

Part of the reason why Davies was keen to put pen to paper on a three-year contract was because of what Heckingbottom felt he can do for him as a player. As good as his contribution will be in front of his own defence, the Blades boss intends to push him on his impact further up the pitch, which appealed to Davies.
