Tim Krul, a seasoned goalie, has been signed by Luton Town from Norwich City.
The 35-year-old Dutch international, who has previously played for Newcastle, Brighton, and the Canaries, has agreed to a deal of unspecified length to return to the Premier League.
Prior to their Premier League campaign, Luton has added ten new players, with Krul being their second goalkeeper after Thomas Kaminski.
Neither team has mentioned whether a price was paid.
A conversation with his former Norwich colleague Carlton Morris convinced Krul to make the transfer, and he expressed his happiness in his arrival interview posted on the Luton Town website.
The history of Luton Town speaks for itself; the past nine years have been an incredible adventure, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it, the man stated. The club has seen a whirlwind; when I spoke with Carlton Morris, he was very complimentary of what is taking place there.
Neither club has specified if a fee was involved.
In his arrival interview on the Luton Town website, Krul he was delighted to make the move, having been sold by a chat with his former Norwich teammate Carlton Morris.
He said, “The story of Luton Town speaks for itself, the last nine years has been an amazing journey and I’m excited to join that journey. It’s been a whirlwind for the club; I spoke to Carlton Morris and he spoke very highly about what’s happening at this club.
“I know Thomas Kaminski as well, it’s good to speak a bit of Dutch Flemish to him. It’s so important to have competition for places, if you look at the Premier League teams, they have lots of competition for spots and it should be no different here.”
Krul first moved to England as a teenager in 2005 when he joined Newcastle United, and he would succeed Steve Harper as the club’s number one goalkeeper in 2011, making 184 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, including being an ever present when Newcastle finished 5th in the 2011/12 Premier League.
“I also know Thomas Kaminski; it’s helpful to converse with him in a little bit of Dutch-Flemish. It’s crucial to have competition for positions. If you look at the Premier League clubs, there is fierce battle for positions, and the same should apply here.
When he joined Newcastle United as a teenager in 2005, Krul made his first move to England. He would replace Steve Harper as the club’s starting goalkeeper in 2011, making 184 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions, including being a constant when Newcastle finished fifth in the 2011–12 Premier League.
After loan stints with Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, the goalkeeper left Newcastle in 2017 and spent a year with Brighton before joining Norwich in 2018 and quickly emerging as the team’s first choice. He made 169 appearances for Norwich, playing a key role in both their promotion-winning seasons of 2018–19 and 2020–21 as well as their Premier League seasons of 2019–20 and 2021/22.
The goalkeeper has also made 15 appearances for the Dutch national team, with his most notable appearance coming as a late replacement for the quarterfinal penalty shootout against Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup, when he saved two penalties.
