Another: Ipswich Town Player Set To Exit from The Club To League One Rivals

Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell has said Tom Carroll has impressed him in his trialist outings with the Grecians.
Ipswich Town let go of former Tottenham Hotspur and QPR midfielder Carroll last summer, releasing him upon the expiry of his contract at Portman Road.

Since then, the 31-year-old has remained out of the game. He’s been a free agent for over a year now but could be in line for a return to the game ahead of the 2023/24 campaign after catching the eye on trial with League One side Exeter City.

Grecians boss Gary Caldwell has been speaking to Devon Live about Carroll, labelling him as ‘outstanding’ after the 3-0 win over Taunton Town earlier this week. Here’s what he had to say on the midfielder:

“Tom was outstanding.

“His quality and understanding of the role was great, he takes information on and puts it onto the pitch, and the overall awareness and the way he controls the game is really good to see.

“We will see how he is this week. He has come in for a few days, we will keep speaking to him, but he showed his quality, and we are delighted with him so far.”

Carroll has struggled with injuries before and after such a long spell out of the game, he will need time to get back to 100%. However, impressive performances in appearances against Bath City and now Taunton should only aid his bid to return to the game.

Returning to the game?
After a year without a club, Carroll looks to be on the right track to a return to football ahead of the new season.

He’s got great pedigree behind him after spells in the Premier League and the Championship. The Watford-born midfielder played 56 times for Tottenham Hotspur after coming through their youth ranks and played in the top-flight and second-tier during his time on the books with Swansea City.

Injury has prevented Carroll from really kicking on over the course of his career and that is something that would surely come into the thinking of Caldwell and Exeter City if they weigh up offering him a deal. However, his composed presence in midfield could make him a big hit in League One and after some brief but promising outings for the Grecians, Carroll may well return to the game this summer.
